Jan. 9, 2010 - The storm that dumped heavy snow in Washington, Philadelphia and Baltimore from Dec. 18-20, 2009 has been classified a Category 3 or "Major" winter storm by NOAA.

Botany meets art, architecture

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10, 2009 - Artists, architects, historians and oh yes, plant lovers of all variegated stripes from botanists to green thumbs will be mesmerized by "Holiday Magic," this year's holiday show at the U.S. Botanic Garden, a living plant museum nestled majestically next to the U.S. Capitol.

NASA to map sky in infrared

Dec. 3, 2009 – From Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Dec. 9, NASA will launch WISE, its newest spacecraft that will map the sky in infrared.

Antarctic ozone hole monitored

Nov. 19, 2009 - NOAA researchers report that the Antarctic ozone hole, which fluctuates in later winter and spring in the southern hemisphere, reached its peak in late September. The report was released Tuesday.

America Recycles Day

Nov. 15, 2009 - Celebrating its 12th year, today is America Recycles Day, held each year on Nov. 15 to promote recycling and encourage Americans to buy recycled products.

College students develop NASA experiment

Nov. 13, 2009 - When the Atlantis space shuttle blasts into space on Nov. 16, on board will be an experiment developed by college students to study how microbes grow in microgravity.

World Food Prize awarded

Oct. 30, 2009 - On Oct. 15, Dr. Gebisa Ejeta, Purdue University professor, received the World Food Prize during a ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol building.

Iraq exhibition opens at Penn Museum

Oct. 24, 2009 - A new, long-term exhibition, “Iraq’s Ancient Past: Rediscovering Ur’s Royal Cemetery,” opens Sunday, Oct. 25, at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Opening ceremonies are from 1:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. at the museum.

McMiracle begun in Philly is 288 strong

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 16, 2009 - The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia on Oct. 15, 1974. On Thursday, its founders celebrated 35 years of service to families in need.

Team Germany wins Solar Decathlon

Ozone threat identified

Sept. 11, 2009 - In a new study by NOAA scientists, nitrous oxide has been identified as the largest ozone-depleting substance emitted through human activities.

Rare giant squid captured

Sept. 24, 2009 – Only the second one since 1954, a giant squid was captured off the Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico by scientists from NOAA’s Fisheries Service.

Ice Bridge Team leaves for Antarctica

Oct. 12, 2009 - As part of Operation Ice Bridge, NASA's DC-8, a flying laboratory, will take off today from Edwards, California for Punta Arenas, Chile where NASA's Ice Bridge Team will be based until mid-November to study Antarctica.

2009: 32 lightning fatalities in US

Sept. 24, 2009 - More than 70 percent of deaths due to lightning occur between June and August, according to John Jensenius of the National Weather Service.
